Why deal with drug use and underage drinking?
Students who use marijuana before the age of 15 are three times more likely to have left school by age 16, and two times more likely to report frequent truancy.
In 2007, 15.4% of 12th graders reported using prescription drug non-medically within the past year. Vicodin continues to be abused at unacceptably high-levels, including 9.6% of 12th graders during 2007.
Between 2005 and 2007, past year abuse of ecstasy increased among 12th graders from 3.0% to 4.5%; between 2004 and 2007, past year abuse of ecstasy increased among 10th graders from 2.4% to 3.5%.
Adolescents who begin dinking before the age of 15 are four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence as an adult than those who wait until age 21. Each additional year of delayed onset reduces the probability of alcohol dependence by 14%.
Adolescents who use alcohol may remember 10% less of what they have learned than those who don't drink.
65.9% of those youth reporting heavy alcohol use had also engaged in one or more of the following delinquent behaviors: participating in a serious fight at school or at work, participating in a group-against-group fight; attacking someone with the intent to seriously hurt them, stealing or attempting to steal something worth $50.00 or more, selling illegal drugs, and/or carrying a hand gun within the last year.
Because Prevention Works!
Substance abuse prevention makes a significant impact on reducing illicit drug use among teens, evidenced by the 24% overall decline in teen illicit drug use since 2001.
Past 30 day use of alcohol among 12th grade students decreased at a rate of 9.0%, from 49.8% in 2001 to 44.4% in 2007.
Past 30 day use of marijuana among 8th graders decreased at a rate of 38.0%, from 9.2% in 2001 to 5.7% in 2007.
Past 30 day use of methamphetamine among 12th graders decreased at a rate of 53.8%, from 1.3% in 2001 to 0.6% in 2007.
Because Prevention Pays!
Effective substance abuse prevention can yield major economic dividends. The savings per dollar spent on substance abuse prevention can be substantial and range from $2.00 to $20.00.
